Acaricidal activity of leaves of Morus nigra against the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Dantas,A.C.S.; Freire,D.P.; Souza,G.R.; Almeida,J.R.G.S.; Rolim,L.A.; Castro,R.N.; Horta,M.C..
ABSTRACT The acaricidal activity of crude ethanolic extract and fractions from the leaves of Morus nigra (Moraceae) was carried out on female cattle ticks Rhipicephalus microplus, using the adult immersion test. The mortality and fertility of females exposed to different concentrations of hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions, as well as ethanolic extract of M. nigra with concentrations of 5, 10 and 25mg/ml were evaluated using three treatment groups, two control groups and triplicate tests. The study also identified the main phenolic compounds of the extract and fractions of this species by HPLC. The chloroform fraction of leaves of M. nigra (25mg/mL) showed the best results for this species, obtaining 62.6% of inhibition of oviposition, 39.3% of...

Application of mulberry (Morus alba L.) for supplementing antioxidant activity in extruded Thai rice snack Thai Agricultural
Chulaluck Charunuch; Plerncha Tangkanakul; Saovaluk Runggaeng.
Owing to creation of Thai rice snack with health benefits for higher potential in commercial scale, mulberry leaf was applied in the production of extruded snack product. Mulberry leaf in dried powder was mixed with rice, corn, soy, sugar, oil, vitamins and minerals to investigate the operating conditions with twin-screw extruder at varying mulberry content (5, 7.5 and 10%), screw speed (300 and 350 rpm) and feed moisture (13, 15 and 17%) in the 3 × 2 × 3 factorial experiment. The extrudates were examined of functional properties (antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds) and some physical characteristics (expansion ratio, bulk density, texture measurement and organoleptic test). The results had shown that at higher mulberry content (10%), the product...

Estimation of weed dry biomass and grain yield as a function of growth and yield traits under allelopathic weed management in maize Planta Daninha
MAHMOOD,A.; KHALIQ,A.; IHSAN,M.Z.; NAEEM,M.; DAUR,I.; MATLOOB,A.; EL-NAKHLAWY,F.S..
Growing concerns about toxicity and development of resistance against synthetic herbicides have demanded looking for alternative weed management approaches. Allelopathy has gained sufficient support and potential for sustainable weed management. Aqueous extracts of six plant species (sunflower, rice, mulberry, maize, brassica and sorghum) in different combinations alone or in mixture with 75% reduced dose of herbicides were evaluated for two consecutive years under field conditions. A weedy check and S-metolachlor with atrazine (pre emergence) and atrazine alone (post emergence) at recommended rates was included for comparison. Weed dynamics, maize growth indices and yield estimation were done by following standard procedures. All aqueous plant extract...

Improved 1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) production in mulberry leaves fermented by microorganism BJM
Jiang,Yun-Gang; Wang,Chu-Yan; Jin,Chao; Jia,Jun-Qiang; Guo,Xijie; Zhang,Guo-Zheng; Gui,Zhong-Zheng.
DNJ, an inhibitor of α-glucosidase, is used to suppress the elevation of postprandial hyperglycemia. In this study, we focus on screening an appropriate microorganism for performing fermentation to improve DNJ content in mulberry leaf. Results showed that Ganoderma lucidum was selected from 8 species and shown to be the most effective in improvement of DNJ production from mulberry leaves through fermentation. Based on single factor and three factor influence level tests by following the Plackett-Burman design, the optimum extraction yield was analyzed by response surface methodology (RSM). The extracted DNJ was determined by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatograph equipped with fluorescence detector (HPLC-FD). The results of RSM showed that the...

Isolation and characteristics of lactic acid bacteria isolated from ripe mulberries in Taiwan BJM
Chen,Yi-sheng; Wu,Hui-chung; Yanagida,Fujitoshi.
The objective of this study was to isolate, characterize, and identify lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from ripe mulberries collected in Taiwan. Ripe mulberry samples were collected at five mulberry farms, located in different counties of Taiwan. Eighty-eight acid-producing cultures were isolated from these samples, and isolates were divided into classes first by phenotype, then into groups by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis and sequencing of 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA). Phenotypic and biochemical characteristics led to identification of four bacterial groups (A to D). Weissella cibaria was the most abundant type of LAB distributed in four mulberry farms, and Lactobacillus plantarum was the most abundant LAB found in the remaining farm....

Performance Analysis of Production and Trade of Indian Silk under WTO Regime AgEcon
Umesh, Kotrakerebasegowda; Akshara, Mutuguppe; Shripad, Bhat; Harishkumar, K.; Srinivasan, S.M..
India is the second largest producer of silk and also the largest consumer of silk in the world having a strong tradition bound domestic market. In this paper, growth functions were estimated for India’s aggregate production and trade parameters using annual data from 1984/85 to 2006/07. To know the temporal price efficiency between the World (China) and Domestic market (India) the co-integration test was done for the period from 1991/92 to 2004/05. The performance analysis was done considering both mulberry and non-mulberry silk sectors at all India level for two sub-periods (Pre-WTO; 1984-85 to 1994-95 and Post-WTO; 1995-96 to 2006-07). The overall growth in production of cocoon and raw silk in India exhibited a decreasing trend with moderate...
